Guillaume Dufay - Vergene bella

The lauda was a type of vernacular, monodic sacred song—monk meets troubadour, if you will—which was popular in the early 15th Century in Italy at the time when Guillaume Dufay was probably the most respected composer in Europe. His Vergene bella is a setting of a poem by Petrarch.

Music IS my religion, and Beethoven my most exalted prophet.

Some of my other favorites include Dmitri Shostakovich, Hector Berlioz, Franz Schubert, Charles Ives, Antonio Vivaldi, György Ligeti, Sofia Gubaidulina, Nino Rota, Danny Elfman, The Beatles, and Gogol Bordello.

Each era, each composer, each sound all have their own unique flavor. That's why I continue to listen to, look at, taste, etc. as many things as I can to better understand what I like. This blog is for me to share those images and sounds that I like so much with other people.
