I enjoy your blog, and I tend to agree with your views. You do some good work here. That said, I think that to be fair, arts only becomes 'elitist' when people make it so. Many arts people don't "get" sports, and that's completely fine. But it goes both ways. You don't understand why throwing a ball around is important; others don't understand why playing a few notes is so important. It's unfortunate sports is so mainstream, but there's nothing wrong with following sports if you enjoy it.
I don’t enjoy sports but you are right, people have the right to like and dislike whatever they want and I encourage people to pursue their interests.
My issue is not with sports (although I do have issues with promoting aggressive behavior) but with the society we live in that gives the most profitable ventures the loudest voice and encourages artistic things to make the most money (by appealing to the lowest common denominator) instead of promoting art for art’s sake.
I would further argue that enjoying art for art’s sake is what many misinterpret as elitist.
